E-Invoice Registration Process in India

E-Invoice Registration Process in India

E-invoicing has been made mandatory in India for businesses with an annual turnover of more than Rs. 50 crore as of October 1, 2020. The GST Network uses e-invoicing to generate, validate, and authenticate invoices electronically (GSTN).

The e-invoice registration process in India is divided into two stages: GSTN registration and Invoice Registration Portal registration (IRP).

Stage 1 is GSTN registration.

Businesses must register with the GSTN by following the steps outlined below:

1. Obtain a GSTIN: Before registering for e-invoicing, a business must first obtain a Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN). Businesses must apply for a GSTIN using the GST portal and provide the necessary documentation.

2. Obtain an active GSTIN: After obtaining a GSTIN, businesses must keep the GSTIN active by filing all required returns and paying any outstanding taxes.

3. Enable e-invoicing on the GST portal: Once the GSTIN is activated, businesses must log in with their credentials to enable e-invoicing on the GST portal.

4. Generate IRN: Once e-invoicing is enabled, businesses can generate an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) for each invoice issued. The IRN is a one-of-a-kind number generated by the GSTN that is used to track invoices.

Stage 2: Sign up for the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP)

Businesses must register with the IRP by following the steps outlined below:

1. Obtain a GSP: A business needs to obtain a GST Suvidha Provider (GSP) to access the IRP. A GSP is a third-party service provider that helps businesses generate e-invoices and file GST returns.

2. Choose an IRP: In order to generate e-invoices, businesses must first choose an IRP. The GSTN has approved several IRPs, and businesses can select the one that best meets their needs.

3. Integrate with the IRP: Once an IRP has been selected, businesses must integrate their accounting or billing software with the IRP. The integration process varies depending on the software that the company uses.

4. Generate e-invoices: Once the integration is complete, businesses can use their accounting or billing software to generate e-invoices. The IRP then validates and authenticates the e-invoices before sending them to the GSTN.

Finally, the GSTN and the IRP must be registered as part of the e-invoice registration process in India. Businesses must get a GSTIN, enable e-invoicing on the GST portal, apply for a GSP, choose an IRP, integrate their accounting or billing software with the IRP, and generate e-invoices. E-invoicing helps to streamline the invoicing process, reduce errors, and improve GST compliance.
