Is IEC code necessary for export of services?

Service providers, who are also rendering services outside India always had this doubt, whether they also need to get themselves registered and get Import Export Code. Also, if you wish to avail the benefit under Foreign Trade Policy then you need an IEC number. If import or export is made for personal use or is made by government department then no IEC is required. To Conclude – IEC is required only when export or import is in specified services or specified technology which are of national security such as dealing in nuclear weapons or some automatic guns. So, in a nutshell we can conclude that if you are exporting services other than specified services, you do not need an IEC.

Process of IEC Registration


Access the DGFT portal and click on Online IEC application option.

Link for accessing the website www.dgft.gov.in and click on Services tab.

STEP-2 Verify Pan Name and DOB through OTP.

Before filing for application applicant have to verify the pan for proceeding for application filing.

STEP-3 Filling the required details and uploading required documents.

Details of applicant and applicant’s entity is required to be filled and documents to be uploaded as required depending on the entity whether it proprietor, company, firm etc.

STEP-4 Print application, Verify and submit with payment of fee.

Before proceeding with the payment of fee applicant has to verify the application filled by clicking the print application Tab and after verification of all the details we can proceed with the submitting of application of payment process.

STEP-5 Verification of application by the department.

After the payment of fee the application is then sent to IEC section where it is processed. If the application is found complete in all aspects (as per requirements prescribed) an IEC is generated, or else a deficiency letter stating the nature of deficiency is prepared and sent to the applicant.

Step 6 - Generate IEC certificate.

IEC certificate is sent over the mail by the department. An acknowledgement in form of a receipt having File Number is generated on receipt of application which is used for generating IEC certificate online.

Copy of PAN Carcd (Self Attested), Latest Passport sized photograph of the applicant, Address proof of business ( Rent agreement and NOC in case of rented premises)

ID and Address Proof of Appicant / Directors / Partners etc ( Adhar Card / Voter ID/ Driving licence/ Passport ) (self attested), Business proof in case of legal entity or registered body, Partnership deed, Authorisation letters, Certificate of Incorporation, Board Resolution or registration certificate

Cancelled Cheque Copy or Certificate from the Banker of the applicant, The photograph pasted on the banker’s certificate must be attested by the banker with Seal and Signature of the applicant. (if applicable)
